modding a SATA dvd drive (pics are 800x600)

Post by fiber-optics »

ok i was bord today and really didn't know what to do so i decide to mod my new sata dvd writer

these are the stuff you will need:

A SATA DVD Writer
Three 3.5V LEDs of whatever colours you choose
Three 1K Resistors (or a single 1.5K resistor)
Some Thin Wire
Some Heatshrink
Silicone
A Soldering Iron
Solder Lead
Hair Dryer or Heat Gun
A tester to test for power

Image

Image

as in DJV website you will need to open up your drive

then test for your power

you will need to solder to of the 12V pins together otherwise youw drive will not open
it took me 5 mins to figure this out

solder the wires like so :

Image

Image

NOw retest to see if you get 12V on the wires that are solded
like so

Image

once you get 12V you are now ready to solder your resistors onto your 12V positive wire

next you will need your LED's i decided to use 4

Image

NOTE the LED's with longer legs are positive

next you need to open them up like this

Image

once you are done you are ready to solder the leds together

Image

test the led's if they work before neating your wires

Image

AAAHHHHHHHH it works

Image

Image

next step neatin up wiring and put heat shrink over the resistors like so

Image

solder wires onto LEd's

Image

Image

now time for the messy part with this baby

Image

silicone leds onto the dvd writer and adjust to the high where the tray can move back and foward without interuption for the LED's or silicone

Image

Image

once dry

you ready for a modded drive
please note like DJV said in his site let the silicone dry for atleast 24 hrs

and here are my final pictures

Image

i will upload videos tomorow on youtube

oh and who ever wants there SATA drives modded please PM me because i'm really getting bord at home

cheers fiber

Nice!!!

The Asus drive i tried an LED mod on was dead after the mod, so i didn't bother trying again. So obviously the drive plays a rather important role here. The asus wouldn't play, but the Samsung will.

Very nice work dude :D
