Linux Distro Discussion

Post by Vampyre_2099 »

Hey all

it's been a while since I've been on the forums. Anyway, what I wanted to do was start a topic for the discussion of the different distros and for people to discuss which they feel is the best and why.

I'm currently in the act of choosing a distro. In the past week I've tried Ubunut, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Zenwalk and Arch. I'm in the act of downloading gentoo as I've always wanted to try it.

So... go!

hmm... that good?

<shamefully admits to using little other than ubuntu for more than a year now...>

i've recently fondled DSL again, but i wouldn't rate it as a contender... canonical's done a great job so far, and their driver base is certainly the best i've encountered.

i should, however, note that i dislike the plymouth colour scheme in LL...

I'm not very tempted by openSUSE... not sure what it is.

I'm currently back using ubuntu while I wait for gentoo to finish downloading. Main reason I like ubuntu, tons of support.

I prefer Mint or Fedora.

Also haven't used much else besides Ubuntu. Lucid Lynx is just fantastic though, so I don't see myself switching anytime soon but I'd like to give openSUSE a try...

I use opensuse because I don't have a net connection at home I prefer installing from a DVD with tons of software as to installing from a CD and then trying to do something but finding that I need to dl some piece of code.

Just tried using Sabayon, been using it all day and I must say that I'm pretty happy. It's based off Gentoo, so it seems to be a bit quicker, except on package installation due to having to compile everything
