2de: I installed Ubuntu server 9.10 witch went well.. now my network Card is not working..
do I need to install driver or anything funny like that?

I'm using a P4 2.4 with 2Gig Ram and a FX5200 Gfx card with 2x 120Gig HDD's PC wil this do for what I need?

first off, was this a LAMP install?

as to your NIC, what is the output from :

Code: Select all

lspci
or
lspci | grep Network

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a
and, immediately after boot,

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail
also, please post the contents of /etc/resolv.conf - (are you running CLI?)

PS: Reason I am posting off his account is because I'm using his PC. My PC is without internet for the time being as I am setting up the server using my port now... ah damn, I feel like such a noob now...

Okay, I've finally managed to install webmin now.

Now it doesn't seem to be working. When I type in the ip in my adress bar, followed by :1000, it doesn't want to log in. It does give a response if I ping the ip though, but not the name of the server. Also, if I only type the ip, it goes to the apache page. So there is a connection, webmin just doesn't... well, work.

EDIT:

Oops, webmin is port 10 000...

Cool, new question.

After screwing up the server and having to do a full reinstall, I decided to load both the ubuntu-desktop and webmin packages. Works like a charm.

I just want to know, how can I add/remove files in directories that I did not create in ubuntu? Thing is, I want to copy the intraweb files over as I finish them to test, but I can't do anything in the /var/www folder. I log in with the account I created and normally, in ubuntu desktop, it would ask the root password if you do not have permission to do something. This one just denies denies denies. Any help?

Code: Select all

gksu nautilus...
this will open a session of nautilus as SU... (this will allow you to view and modify permissions... anything you copy across in an SU instance will need to have permissions modified as ownership will default to SU when none exists!)

if all else fails:

Code: Select all

sudo chmod 777 -R /var/www
with the understanding that this blows the folder and its contents wide open!...

New Question:

I've installed some LDAP support now and can authenticate users using the AD.

I need to get LDAP support now on the linux server (works fine on Windows) as that is where the site will be hosted internally (and probably externally).

I have a guide here that shows me how, but this is the output I get from running the script to Configure, compile, and install PHP:

Code: Select all

bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

if you installed via apt, you just need to configure PHP...

How do I go about configuring something. One of the pages I found has a certain package that you need to install and configure in a certain way. But I have seen the configuration screen before and completed it, on my own. I want to bring that dialogue up again to configure it like they say. How do I bring that dialogue up?

if it was a .deb package:

Code: Select all

dpkg-reconfigure apackage
if you want to view the current config:

Code: Select all

debconf-show apackage
if you want to use the generic editor, (you will need to browse for your package):

Code: Select all

gconf-editor

Ok, that didn't work.

I installed some LDAP libraries, and it showed me configuration boxes similar to these shown here (in fact, it looked exactly the same). How do I get ubuntu to show these boxes again?
