A few queries..Bulldozer Overclocking

Post by Hellfury »

My current system is as follows

CPU AMD FX 8120 Octa-core 3.1Ghz
Motherboard ASUS M5A99X Evo (AMD 990FX)
RAM 12Gb DDR3-1333 (2 x 2Gb Corsair ValueSelect + 2x4Gb Kingston Valueram)
GFX GTX460 SLI @810/1620/3600 -Zotac nVidia GTX460 2gb
-MSI nVidia GTX460 Cylcone 1Gb OC

HDD 320Gb Western Digital SATA2 |
250Gb Seagate SATA2 | in Coolermaster 4in3 Device Module
250Gb Seagate SATA1 |
2Tb Seagate Green SATA3 |
160Gb Hitachi SATA2 (2.5in)
80Gb Western Digital Scorpion SATA2 (2.5in)
Optical Samsung DVD-RW
Chassis Coolermaster Centurion5 II
PSU Coolermaster GX 750W
Fans 4x 12cm Coolermaster Blue LED (1 in device module), 1x 14cm Coolermaster Blue LED
Monitor Dell 23" LED LCD
OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Sp1

My questions are, in your opinion what would be the best cooler for the fx? i want to try hit 4.5ghz> looking to spend tops R900 on the cooler

how do i disable turbo core? i dont see an option in BIOS, ive disabled cnc, and unticked the supposed turbo option in aoc. But i still get a multipier fluctuation in cpu-z

Thirdly, what would be decent coolers for my gfx cards? I was looking at the deepcool v6000 but im not sure if they will fit (im unclear as to exactly how many slots they occupy (i can afford 3 for each (card inluded))

Any advice and/or reccomendations would be sincerely appreciated

Buy Intel.

As for a cooler I recommend the Corsair H80. I got mine for R1200. Pretty sure you can shave off R100-200. Not sure what the AMD socket looks like and if its still using the same one for a few years now.

the pc started as a basic athlon2 on a biostar motherboard, hence limitations and all parts were aquired in bits and pieces

Ok in that case the watercooling I mentioned is what you are looking for.
http://rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_p ... ts_id=8210

There is the basic idea. Installation takes time on your first time. I suggest having an assistant when installing it to hold the fans ect. Since its a closed loop it will last you 3-5 years with no need of replacing the liquid. The 3 speed settings are manually set so its up to you to choose quiet, medium, loud. I'm not OCing my system but a youtuber got his i7 2600k to 4.5ghz with medium flow at 45C or something like that. My highest temp is currently sub 60C on normal with low flow.

Cannot help with the OC settings on your system though.

CPUZ should always show a multiplier fluctuation. As far as intel goes it goes into an "idle" state where the cpu scales down to 1.2ghz when it is not used under load. I take AMD has the same with your cpu powering up to its max speed and down to its min speed. If you enable turbocore (assuming its like turbo boost) you should see your clock speed increase more than it would normally be but because its only using 1 core.

Mine idles at 35C and just under 60C with load without being overclocked yet. But again its low flow and the weather has had room temp at anything between 26-32C.

I got an ocz vertex 3 60gb ssd for OS. More queries, what voltage should I run at? All the reviews and articles I've read seem to have conflcting opinions, also, should I use manual or offset voltage in the uefii bios? And finally, what other settings should I enable/diable in the bios? Uefi confuses me:( thanks in advance

What settings would I need to adjust to keep cpu voltage so that it doesn't fluctuate? And is this a good idea or not?
