Thermal paste problem

Post by Mike_J.M »

I have the Coolermaster ThermalFusion 400 paste.
When I take my CPU fan off it sticks to the CPU. It is difficult to remove.
Any ideas?

the best bet is to run the PC for a few mins and then try remove it while it is hot.Normally to remove it you need to twist the fan slightly to the left or right and pull slightly while still in the socket. However if the CPU has pins you could pull out or bend a pin if you are not careful.

edit - ah wait I see now.
If you need to remove the sink and it is truly stuck, do the following:
Run the PC, do something that will heat it up.
Power down, remove the entire mainboard out of the case.
Remove the fan if possible and then gently use a toothpick to release the suction.
Also try to slide it off rather than pulling it off.

Once that is done, clean with spirits/acetone.

Old paste gets dry, but I'd say it is just because it makes an air tight seal.

Don't have much experience with it myself, but Arctic Silver seems to be quite popular.
