Actually I would be tempted to employ IPv4 on the inside of a company and have your normal internal NATing through your firewall to ensue. It could also mean a nice bump in security. Imagine for instance... you keep all your internal servers and workstations on IPv4 which would constitute your green zone. Then you have your firewall which is in the red zone bound with two nics... the one on IPv4 (green) and one on IPv6 (red) where the latter would be connected to your router and thus the net. At this point I don't see a point of completely ditching your internal network architecture when you can simply make a small change between your already existing router and firewall.

Looks like the ISPs in the USA are waking up - Comcast have activated their first users running both IPv4 and IPv6 natively. Here's their blog post.

As part of the final assignment of IPv4 address space to the RIRs, AfriNIC received 102.0.0.0/8.

For those interested, that means that AfriNIC's total address pool consists of:

41.0.0.0/8
102.0.0.0/8
105.0.0.0/8
197.0.0.0/8

AfriNIC also administers the legacy blocks of 154.0.0.0/8 and 196.0.0.0/8. There are also some legacy blocks that we have that are administered by ARIN (a throwback from before AfriNIC was formed and ARIN used to administer our IPv4 address space) - as an example, UCT uses 137.158.0.0/16, which ARIN administers. Those IPv4 address spaces are negligible though.

The full list of IPv4 assignments, grouped by /8 address space, is here.

I spend a few hours on and off the past few days, and my home is almost fully dual stack now(have to do my file server next, but still have to swap it 2nd network card, it seems buggered). Its running as a test, I still have to change my IPs on the 6to4 tunnels manually, but a script should fix that.
Anyone else already running a IPv6 network at home/work?

Its not just between PCs, I break it out over the internet. That is what I use the 6to4 tunnel for. Though not many sites support IPv6 yet, it is the direction the world is going. The sooner I fully understand IPv6 and all its capabilities and pitfalls the better.

The overhead it creates on a LAN is so little, it wouldn't bother anyone. The only place it will be noticed is on slow WAN links with small packets (eg. VoIP).

If you use manual link local IPs on a LAN it can be just as easy. While I won't suggest it for a bigger network(more than one IP range) it works fine to use IPs like fe80::10. Typing and remembering it can be just as easy as say 192.168.0.1

Asia Runs Out of IPv4 Addresses
Posted by timothy on Thursday April 14, @06:48PM
from the perhaps-you'd-like-to-try-the-duck dept.
ZerXes writes
"It seems that APNIC has just released the last block of IPv4 addresses and are now completely out, a lot faster then expected. Even though APNIC received 3 /8 blocks in February the high growth of mobile devices made the addresses to run out even before the summer. 'From this day onwards, IPv6 is mandatory for building new Internet networks and services,' says APNIC Director General Paul Wilson."

Slashdot wrote:As the June 8 World IPv6 Day experiment draws near, there is universal agreement that little IPv6 traffic is traversing the Internet at the moment. The event is designed in part to increase that volume. However, it will be difficult for Internet policymakers, engineers and the user community at large to tell how the upgrade to IPv6 is progressing because no one has accurate or comprehensive statistics about how much Internet traffic is IPv6 versus IPv4.

From what I read in the comments, the Aussies are pretty jacked up with IPv6 already - but they have to be, since APNIC (the Asia/Pacific regional registry) is, for most intents and purposes, out of IPv4 addresses (you can still get IPv4 address space from them, but only to aid in the IPv6 transition, and you'll only get one /22). Would like to get jamin's viewpoint here.

Network World wrote:The Internet Engineering Task Force is considering establishing a working group to smooth some of the impending issues around setting up and maintaining IPv6-based Internet connections into homes.

"A collection of protocols needs to be agreed upon, so vendors of equipment used in home networks will have an interoperable suite of protocols available," said Ralph Droms, a distinguished engineer for Cisco and among those who want to form the IETF working group.

Such a group, should it be approved by the IETF, would specify how IPv6 could be deployed in the home in an easy and consistent manner, using protocols developed by the IETF.

^^ I wonder how smoothly these changes will go once Telkom get involved :? . The world needs to start getting IPv6 going soon as the amount of IPv4 addresses is running out fast.

I think I've mentioned this before, but in case I haven't... us ISPs that provide ADSL services have to use Telkom's IPConnect product to bridge between our networks and Telkom's fixed line infrastructure. It doesn't support IPv6 at all.

Telkom is busy with a new product that will give us lower level access and will enable us to assign IPv6 addresses to end users, but I'm not sure how far along that's coming.

If I know Telkom it might happen if we are lucky in about 300 years time. This is where the problem lies, although there are many ISP's to choose form all of them have to use Telkom infrastructure. So Telkom really are not that bothered about trying to beat any competition by releasing new tech or in this case moving on to the new standard. If only neotel would start getting the ISP's to use their infrastructure but there are a few problems that are preventing that form happening.

Lol, what infrastructure. Neotel has a helluva lot of work to do before anyone will take them seriously as a competitor to Telkom.

That is true. But they(and everyone else) have been digging up the whole of Brackenhurst recently so hopefully things will start moving :)

World IPv6 Launch: this time it's for real
By Iljitsch van Beijnum | Published a day ag

As happened during last year's World IPv6 Day, the Internet Society is taking the lead in organizing World IPv6 Launch on June 6, 2012. (Yes, right on the heels of the Venus transit across the disk of the sun.) But unlike last year, after turning on the new version of the Internet Protocol on some of the largest Web properties—and many smaller ones—this year, IPv6 will not be turned off again 24 hours later. So "this time it's for real," and the new protocol will be here to stay at Google, Yahoo, Bing, Facebook, and Cisco, as well as many Akamai and Limelight customers.
