One of 'those' Legal WiFi Questions

Post by SBSP »

If i had to put up a very high lightning conductor pole and attach an AP with a decent Omni antennae to it.

and have a couple of people in an area with IP camera's connected to their own AP's and antennas
and have their AP's connected to the the high sight that i created.

then have their cameras stream video to a server at the Highsight which then streams those videos to
a website via a telkom/neotel/vodacom SP.

And then in the end charge people per video view on the website ?

Would that be legal ?

If not howcome telkom is allowed to sell Wireless broadband to people and irritate me with clogged
wireless detections on my ubuntu machine ?

I'm sure it's a normal pey-per-view type connection thing.

What on earth would they be paying to watch though? Neighbours tanning?

exactly that.

Yea well for the people using it, but you get people as soon as they are unhappy about something
they turn on you, I need it to be 100% legal, dont want to take chances.

I'm sure if i start charging people to use Voip under a wifi tower i will get into trouble but this is not
for either internet or tellephone's and i'm not planning on using boosters and all that.

Just trying to secure a place that really needs security, but i'm not planning on doing it for free.

If you are using the same type of transmitters / receivers as the WUG's I cannot see a problem.

I'd love to get a clear answer on this as well. Haven't done any wireless CCTV but I'd love to get something like that going in our neighbourhood.
The best view of my driveway is from my neighbour's porch.

Then you should start looking into i a found an awesome Linux system for this called ZoneMinder.

Install ubuntu, update it and install.

VLC
motion
zoneminder.

http://www.zoneminder.com/

It works on motion detection , It can be set to only record, when there is motion.

And in your case if the camera is positioned in your drive way and it can see the cars in the street, you can mask
the part that you dont want to scan on the image. and it wont detect the cars passing by.

Its a web based Gui, a single console.

I'm rather keen on my current embedded system. But this looks nice.

@doo_much Kwl...

The way i understand an omni has less quality connectivity because of it's signal bein transmitted or made available in a big circle.

Like hanging a flashlight upside down the higher you put it the bigger its circle of light becomes but the darker it gets.
Where as directional concentrate more.

Can one use only directionals on a point to point networks

So i will then need a few Directional antennaes in the middle facing opposite directions towards the houses in the above pic
Then have all the houses connect to it ?

the current law states that we can broadcast over public roads only if the application is non commercial . So , you can build your network bud but you cant make money off it. Thats why the wug can do it they do not make money in doing so.

ps. Make sure you stay in a unlicenced band (5.4Ghz) . also ETSI regulations must be followed meaning dfs must be enabled and total EIRP 30db. Im saying this cause Icasa are gonna start taking down any networks that do not conform to these regulations. This will coincide with the verdict on 5.8Ghz licence exemptions.

pps. No , you can use omni directional antenna for point to point but it kinda defies the point. Directional antenna concentrate the beam and thus limit noise. You can also get away with using lower gain directional antenna. A 5-9dbi directinal is much cheaper that a 9dbi omni/17dbi sector.

In your case i would look at a 9dbi omni in the middle and 9-12dbi directional ( narrowbeam )antenna at the endpoints.

Look dude. Those bussineses are in violation of our countries transmission laws. Its done , its common but its not legal. If I were you i would build the network , make sure that you stick to the unlicenced band (5.4Ghz) and conform to power regulations. Also , DFS or dynamic frequency selection is a must . Then wait , the laws are changing and by June 2010 ( We hope ) you will be able to aply for a cheap wireless carrier licence. You may be able to launch your bussiness in the meantime but keep it low key. The laws are very vague , and the worst that may happen is that icasa could force you to turn your network off. That said, telkom are the only ones who benifit from these laws and thus the only people that care. If you follow above mentioned regulations you have a slim no no chance of affecting telkoms networks. Icasa only care about the regulations and only respond when telkom reports interferance. With DFS your unlikely to interfere , as long as your transmiters are 17-20dbm and no more. No 350 or worse 600mw mikrotik cards PLEASE.

Thanks man you have been very helpful.

Ive been to mybroadband, and a million other forums ive even considered getting a lawyer to figure it out.

From other forums ive read that icasa cant make you take down or take anything from you without a court order.
And a company will mostly sue you for breaking their networks.
Cus they are not the law and the court decides what the law is, some say there will probably only be
a propper law to this when someone is taken to court only then a new law will exist cus no one has been prosecuted yet.

Like the law against murder only ever existed when the a murder happened and the court decided that a person
should not allowed to kill another person freely.

I dont understand this but its something like that.

I also wont be interfering with Telkom as there is no telkom only cell phones and they barly work as its in the wilderness.
If i dont follow the rules on boosters ect ect the worst i will do is break the current security companies wireless alarm triggers.
which is the only one that is allowed to have a controll room with in a 50Km radius. And which is also the same guy that is interested in my idea. He also said that i may use his high sight.

Well dude , thats not exactly true. Allot of kit has been forced down by ICASA . They are not the law but they are a regulater and thus have the ability to get that court order pretty quickly . One of the coutries largest premium wireless disties went down after they were found selling kit that had not passed Icasa validation . Each and every unit they had sold over the three years was tracked down and impounded. They spent R30m on customer returns and lost the case in court. But yea , for the smaller guys ... Should be safe.
