Microsoft Security Essentials fails another antivirus test

Post by Stuart »

Microsoft Security Essentials has once again proven that it's not adequate for protecting a user's computer, after failing another antivirus test by scoring well below competitors' products. Dennis Technology Labs evaluated eight major antivirus programs from October to December 2012, awarding each program both a total accuracy rating and a protection rating, and in their testing they found Microsoft Security Essentials to be significantly worse than the other seven products on the test bed.

Well, these guys reckon the test is bogus.

Ultimately, I'd venture to guess that MSSE, a good dose of common sense and avoiding any emails sent by hamin_aus will keep you pretty safe.

It's just unfortunate that common sense is in such short supply these days.

It's all bullshirt paid-for by AV companies that are either premium of freemium services and are worried about a 100% free competitor eating into their revenue streams.

Avast is probably not on that list because the good people at Avast might have an ounce of business ethics and probably elected not to have anything to do with this obvious crap...

Would like toms or anand to run the same test and see if the original testers are talking smack and are high on crack or if the intention is worthy of mention.

IMO they are but I tend to use 3 - 4 sites when looking at reviews or benchmarks to get the average.

I run MSE and never get viruses, so I'll keep it.

Anand has always been a reliable source for reviews. Tom's on the other hand went through that stage of having "bought" reviews however they seem to have turned that around and are now showing the same results as the other big review sites :).

A/V tests are all fine & well but only when done by a independent company and not one that has interests in one of the contenders.

MSE has a rather bigger than usual patch downloading tonight...
KB2804527 Size: 6.7 MB

This package will update Microsoft Security Essentials client on the user's machine.

More information for this update can be found at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=195462

I'm using integrated MSE inside Windows 8 and I had it on Windows 7 and it was smooth sailing. The only thing I wish it included was the option to right-click and scan individual files.

But it can do that...

It can't, actually. By default the right-click context menu that includes the scan option isn't there, you have to add it in manually.

I don't remember having to specifically add it for Windows 7. Sucks for Windows 8 though.
