Facebook + K9 Problems

Post by Rajiv »

I have K9 Internet Security installed on my PC. Whenever I go onto Facebook - these error messages start popping up at the bottom-right hand corner. At first, I cannot see anybody's profile pics or even my own - I get that white bos with a red cross in the corner thing for every profile pic on-screen. Then sometimes after about 5 minutes - another error pops up - but this time it takes up the whole screen - I then have to open a new tab and open up Facebook again - and log in again. This never used to happen - it started happening about 2 weeks ago.
Please any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!!

Uninstall that crap and install a decent anti-virus product. Plenty of threads about which one to choose in here. ;)

Ja, seriously, even if you just use Windows firewall and MS Security Essentials you'll be in a better position.

If I listened and took advice from most of my colleagues regarding what was good, my PC would be a small pile of twisted, melted scrap metal.

Always stick to a well rated antivirus - MSE is my flavour.

(And ignore Stig's AV hate - *you* do need an antivirus)

 Dont use my quote in your own context

AV's don't solve problems, they help prevent them.
If you are going online without an AV, you are your biggest problem. Enjoy your virtual AIDS.

If you're using an AV to "solve" a problem you're doing it wrong. They are designed and best used to prevent problems, and when a carefully-selected AV is used as intended it causes relatively few headaches in my experience.

I've been using AVG free edition for the past 12 months. Haven't had any problems. Does it's job without bothering me all the time.

For me the definition of a virus is the following. Something that makes your PC slow, use bandwidth without your consent, stop your internet/network/email from working, collects data from your PC, etc. Sounds like most AV programs to me...

I also run without a normal AV, just ClamAV to scan all downloaded files. Further I only download from trusted sources, and I keep flash drives and portable hard drives away from my PC. Those go into my Linux server.

And of cause I don't open the attachment from Attorney Duncan Smith's email regarding $1 million from my "relative" in Nigeria. Especially not if it is Last_will.doc.exe

Finally somebody who agrees. And yes most viruses can be avoided by using some common sense.

I connect to the net via a hardware firewall and a firewalled router. Once a month I scan my drives and not once have I found any viruses....so will I install one, Hell no

If it takes this long to find someone who agrees with you :P
Although I do have a modicum or respect for Nuke's notworking prowess ;)

All of which are great for preventing anyone from gaining unauthorized entry to your PC, or apps making unauthorised connections out, but doesn't do jack when some website wants to install a bit of malware on it.
So unless you can make the claim that Nuke does (never visiting dodgy sites etc) for every machine behind your 2 firewalls (goodluck...9 proxies) then I'm pretty sure your PC's may already be riddled with viruses.

Your claim that you scan and nver see viruses is interesting, what do you scan with, and do you keep it's definitions updated?

Also, I'm no CCNP, but the last time I checked, a router firewall is a hardware firewall.
I'm interested to know what other hardware firewall you have in addition to this...
Pix? CheckPoint? Juniper?

No they do not. You clearly have not seen the damage worms can do. You have not spent hours trying to resurrect data. But that is ok - start working and you will find out. Guess the data you have now is just not that important, or much.

I have two drives in my PC one with XP on it and one with windows 7(my main OS) when I want to scan stuff then I boot off the XP drive, do the necessary AV updates(AVG internet security 2011) and then do a slow scan of both drives.

By hardware firewall, I meant I have a second PC which has an anti-virus as well as anti spyware/malware software installed which I connect through. I did this after reading an article in PCF a few years ago telling you what to do with old PC's

That's not a hardware firewall. That is a proxy server, and a mediocre one at best...

Also zero protection against malware, also, you have antivirus. I forgot why I was having this discussion but I'm pretty sure it's over now. Enjoy your secure environment
