New research cracks AES 3x-5x faster

Their attack can recover an AES secret key from three to five times faster than previously thought possible, reported the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, a research university based in Belgium.

The researchers caution that the attack is complex in nature, and so can not be easily carried out using existing technologies. In practice, the methodology used by the researchers would take billions of years of computer time to break the AES algorithm, they noted.

Proving that it can be done - although, at this stage, I wouldn't be too worried just yet. Digging a bit further reveals that the AES-128 crack requires 288 bytes of storage (that's 281,474,976,710,656 TB to put things into perspective) - by the time that the average person has this amount of disk space available, we would have moved on from AES a long time ago.
