Dagnabbit, I'd better go warn the other mods and admins. Why have we never spotted this before?

Wait until you see the junk that Siemens sends me. He is an alcoholic, I tell ye.

And back on topic, I installed Avast and it does indeed deliver on Jamin's promise. Thumbs up.

The hallmark postcard virus is back, and guess what. Avast fails miserably. It reports the trojan exe as "safe". You'd think that 2 years after the hallmark virus started circulating, it would be in their database. Uninstalling Avast right now and downloading Kaspersky.

Most if not all anti-virus apps have mail scanning software that does this
Is that a guess or a fact? Because MSE and AvastFree don't do it.

Also, I don't understand your jeanpant comment. Maybe I need one hand full of curried rice to get it?
There's no need to scan email, only attachments and that is done by all modern antimalware programs as the files are written to the PC file system.

All of the major AV vendors have been telling their customers for several years now that 'email scanning' is no longer necessary, it's a holdover from the early days of AV programs when Microsoft hadn't yet created the API (Application Programming Interface) sets that allow the AV programs to scan a file before any user access (including email programs) is allowed.

My two-user, two year Eset Nod 32 license expires in two weeks. What are my best free and paid options going into 2012?
Has much changed since the advice given in this thread earlier this year?

I think why pay for something I can get for free.

MSE is IMO the best of the free stuff right now. I have had a falling out with Avast since if started seeing my Startcraft 2 updater as a virus.

If you want to pay for this service Kaspersky might be the best, I cant say with any certainty. People certainly seem to recommend it highly.

My opinion has always been AV is your second line of defence against viruses. Common sense being your first. And if that fails, no amount of money spent on AV will help you - so why not use the free stuff.

I fail to see the problem. Starcraft 2 (and WoW) is a mind-virus.
Lemme take a look at av-test.org as has been suggested to me.

It's antivirus license review time again.....time flows faster when one spends one's life online.

Review....meaning that I may come to my senses and take a leaf out of your book by not paying for protection.

Stranger things have happened.

MSE is already confirmed to not cover every virus out there. It covers about 90% or so and the most common ones.

Well my PC has been surviving ever since I started using it, so I'm happy to continue with it.
