The error I got when I tried attaching recipients to a message has gone. It was something similar though (sorry, i know that isn't helpful. Unfortunately I didn't capture it)

This, apparently, is a known issue in phpBB 3.3.0 (which is what we're currently running). The fix has gone into 3.3.1 which is (as yet) unreleased, but I've been able to manually patch the code with the fix. Let me know if things are OK now.
