"Brace for petrol price shock."

Post by ryanrich »

"Johannesburg - Motorists should brace for a petrol price increase of up to 70 cents a litre next week, followed by higher food prices, economist Mike Schussler said on Wednesday.

"Simply put, the oil prices are up. We expect petrol to increase by between 65 and 70 cents a litre. Ten cents of that is tax - five cents Road Accident Fund levy and five cents pure tax," he said.

Diesel was expected to increase by about 40c a litre.

Schussler pointed out that not just petrol prices were increasing, but also the price of food.

Average wheat prices had increased about 70% by February. White maize was up over 33% by February.

This would affect the price of foodstuffs such as bread, milk, chicken and other meat.

Any increases in the price of petrol, which had a weighting of about 5% in South Africa's inflation rating, also made the possibility of an interest rate hike greater.

"Chances of an interest rate hike are rising day by day," Schussler said."

No, it's Sasols fault that they make fuel out of coal, but still increase their price with oil based fuel.

If it was that simple I would agree but unfortunately there is much more to it than that... If Sasol had a choice it wouldn't make any fuel because it is much more profitable to use the gas from coal in the chemicals sector...

... and Sasol being a global company in the Petrochemical industry is feeling the pressure that comes with the higher oil prices... I work for Sasol and our specific business unit faces it's first year of trading at a loss due to lower prices world wide for our product and the high oil price...

Oh whoopeee. I'm old enough to remember us having to pay an additional levy to allow the old regime to build Sasol - in order to make fuel from coal.

So suck it up.

By the way next time you have a moment, pray tell us what Sasol's profits were last year.

Sasol, Telkom and SAL were all built from our money - and now some real fat cats are enjoying the fruits of our labours.

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.

... yes... don't get me wrong... I will be paying exactly the same price for petrol as any other person in South Africa... the point is it isn't SASOL that is causing the price to go up (and sadly they are also not doing anything to bring it down)... I don't see anybody here carrying on about PetroSA though... :?

A couple of years back SASOL and the government was working together closely still, one hand washing the other... then the "friendship" got a bit tainted and that was the end of that relationship... but enough of this :)

I recently got me a Vuka Scuto (110cc) for work and back... still running it in but it is claimed to get +- 50km/l (A guy in Joburg put on a better filter, tweaked the air/fuel mixture and is supposedly getting 64km/l) will have to wait and see, I'm getting +-40km/l (got 500km on the clock now) :)

Very true.

I hate how the egoverment decides that "eish, we need a party" and then just ramps the petrol price.

and **** bush and the USA for causing the oil crisis.

NailedOne -- How much does that thing cost and what speeds do it reach?

I am just interested to see what is out there... Cant use it myself, drive a bit of a long distance for that thing to be effective... And rain completely screws you over on any bike / scooter...

Due to the prices going up more than what its coming down I got myself a Hyosung 250cc Hyosung which I get about 30 - 35 Km/l. I have to drive about 140km to work and back. Rain is a big factor but there are also days with no rain and even if I'm able to use the bike at twice in a week I save up to 100 bucks :D

- helped abit there with the link @

... in hind site I will get me a bigger bike later... the 110cc is fine for Secunda where everybody that stays here and works for Sasol is +- 8km (maximum) from work... I can't imagine driving further to go to work  I've pushed it to 90km/h (still running it in) and theoretically it should reach 100km/h but I'm not so sure :?

www.vukascuta.com

My one friend summed it up like this once... Secunda you are close to work and an hour from Joburg... in Joburg your an hour from work ;)

Nice... i just personally hate Hyosung... personal taste, as I said, but that those stuff are cr@p...

Ive been biking since grade 10 at school, but got enough rain whilst I was driving to love my car... Would love to keep my bike but Im selling my Yamaha TDR180... Now I just need to find someone to buy it... Where can I advertise guys?

Autotrader and?
Been to most bike shops, they dont want to take a 2nd hand bike and just park it at that size. most places only take stuff from 250 up...

Sigh, and I only want R4000 :(

@doo_much, SASOL don't use ONLY coal to make petrol. There would never be enough coal to satisfy the huge demand for petrol.

SASOL use Coal AND Oil. So the oil price increase does have an effect on them.

But THEY don't set the price increase. That's all the government, in the form of PetroSA....
