Very kewl man.

Just a Q from a n00b: In the first pic, the camera is resting on the metal part of the railway track, right? How did you press the button, or whatever, without shaking the camera?

I've noticed, that with some cheaper digital camera's, and even camera phones, the pics come out really clear if you leave the camera down on some surface instead of holding it in your hand. Does this have something to do with the...shutter speed.. i think it's called. Also, what are the exposure settings for?

Sorry for all the Q's.

I held it in my hand. Reeeealy still. Luckely the ligth was sharp so the shutter speed was high.

Exposure is the size of the lens that is left open. (mostly on SLR cameras and advanced digital ones)
This changes the amount of light that is let in.

The shutter speed is, well, the speed that the film is exposed to the light.

You can change the center thing's, the 'hole', size. That changes the amount of light that is let in.

Wooly - with most automatic cameras (especially digital ones) if the camera detects low or bad light then it will set a slower shutter speed.
So lets say it sets the shutter speed for 1/15th of a second. That means for 1/15th of a second you need to hold the camera absolutely still otherwise you'll get blurring etc..
However if you take a pic in bright sunlight then the camera may set the shutter speed to something like 1/250th of a second - so much much faster. That means you only have to have your hand stable for 1/250th of second so there's less chance that you shake in that time period.

Exposure is a combination of Aperture and Shutter Speed.
On automatic the camera decides what shutter speed and what aperture to use depending on the conditions.
With the more expensive cameras you can manually adjust them
and with the pro cameras (called Single Lens Reflex or SLR) you can change the lenses themselves and each lense may have special speeds and apertures etc..

That is a really simplified version of what happens but you get the idea?

Right.

Diffrent shutter speeds and aperture sizes gives diffrent effects to the image.

I managed to get this photo of me, a buck, a minger-cat, Robert Mugabe, and a voyeur babboon all in one picture. What a moment. Lucky someone had a camera, or no-one would believe me when I told them the story:

Neon, that photo was taken near Wingfield in Cape Town, it is a pic of water spraying out of a broken off fire hydrant. It was stolen while the pipe was live, hence the water at about 7 bar pressure. Stolen for the brass and metal content, fetches about R20 at a scrap yard, Water lost, it sprayed for nearly 30 hours before it was repaired, water worth about R10000.00.

Scarlet, that new Samsung D500 is quite something!
