if we did know the answer to your question, we wouldn't tell you. even if we all do wish to stick it to the cellular phone networks, such things are illegal and are not discussed on the forum.

Current best HTC Android?

Post by Fireball »

Howdy folks!

I am looking to get a new phone soon (currently have a Nokia N95 8GB).

I think the time has come to move from Symbian to Android.
I am looking for an HTC (or rather 'a HTC' ? Not sure which is grammatically correct.) that will work on South African networks.
I know about the Evo 4G and the Incredible. Both are brilliant, but sadly neither one will work on our GSM-based South African networks. They are CDMA and thus do not use SIM cards.

Can anyone recommend a good HTC smartphone? Android 2.1, Sense, HSDPA and Wi-Fi is definately necessary.

IPhone doesn't interest me, due to its poor multi-tasking, so please don't suggest one. HTC only.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

You might want to check the Smartphone discussion thread. Not saying you won't have your question answered here, but most discussion is taking place there these days.

Edit: I'd venture to say current smart money is on the Desire. Although I'm sure someone will tell you to wait just a few months for The Next Big Thing just around the corner.

I currently have an Iphone 3G, and nothing wrong with it, its got a few scratches here and there, Its the best phone and fastest i have ever had compared to my old nokias/samsungs, I also use most of its features.
I'm supposed to be upgrading next month, and i dont feel like waiting for the iphone4 cus its just and iphone3g with a quicker cpu and better screen.

I honestly dont need to upgrade but since its a contract and i must have a contract i would be wasting money on a paid off phone (Well thats how i see it)
So i dont know what to do.

Option 1: Get the cheapest contract phone available and give it away or sell it, and put the sim into my Iphone.
Option 2: Wait for the Iphone4 so i can bragg and show it off :-)
Option 3: Change over to a droid.

What would you have done ?

I would do a little research and get the best phone I can with out having to pay in anything. Oh, wait, that's what I did do.

Having a decent spare phone is always useful - phones get broken or stolen, stop working, misplaced etc

You are right, but i have an old nokia E60 and Samsung D500, the D500 is older but a fully working phone.
Even the battery is still ok and last longer than the Iphone.

I'm kind of attached to my emails and Facebook, maybe a nokia 5230 ?

Those of you with the HTC Desire => what type of cover did you go for? A soft silicon one or a hard one like those popular Blackberry covers? I will be getting my HTC Mozart soon and I want to protect it.

I don't use a cover, but my girlfriend does. She has a hard one that she doesn't like, and she's got one of those silicon looking ones. I think it's terrible, but she loves it :P

I thought you got a cover DAE. I know you use screen protectors but I was positive that you had a cover.

So I'm due for an upgrade, and patiently waiting for the Galaxy Nexus.
Now this past weekend one of my friends asked me why I don't have a BlackBerry. I realised then that I couldn't really give her a valid answer. :|

At first I was like- The hardware sucks. But knowing that I knew nothing about them, I went and checked. While not cutting edge, the new ones aren't exactly lacking in processing power (at least not in the way I use a phone). Now I've heard some stuff about the OS being bad and all, but not enough to be able to base a decision on my knowledge (or lack thereof)

So- while not going into phone usage patterns at this time- can anyone give me the quick and dirty as to why I would/wouldn't consider a BlackBerry?

Touchy are we?

My 2c, if I were to get a Blackberry I'd get a QNX based one. Unfortunately they're not out yet. Could you borrow a mate's phone for a little while to get a feel of what the current os is like? If you are happy with it get one.

Personally I dislike the user interface very much.

None of my friends have a BB with the OS7- if I did get a BlackBerry it would be something like the torch 9860 or such.
And not touchy, I was expecting something like that- just disappointed it came from someone I considered to be one of the more intelligent users.

What's the deal with OS7 and QNX anyway?

OS7 = phone only, upgrade of OS6 = upgrade of OS5 etc.

QNX is supposed to be a fresh start os wise that'll work on tablets and phones. See here for more info

Uhm i kinda didnt want to start a topic for this and i didnt knw where to put it so naturally i put it here :D lol ... anyways ...

I got one of those 8ta data bundles for ipad the 10 gb a month for R199 pm , now its registered by my father's company and its actually the company sim ect so its rica details dont belong to me, infact im not even sure if it is RICA complient however its able to function in the iPad so i assume it is. It took me a while to find it the number cause apparently you cant have the number on the card it must be smsed to you once they know its RICA complient ect ect.

Ok so here is the problem, i recently got an iPhone 4 so i wanted to put this sim card in the iphone and hot spot it and use my iphone for mobile internet cause its a pain to carry a ipad, so i setup my iphone and what not but its refusing to pick up the sim card it seems to pick up the 3G but it blocks all phone activity, now i dont know any more details than that since this was done in bulk for many business people, what are my options is it possible to just go to an 8-ta store and complain because going via the business will take forever :/

oh and the cellphone network signal display says 65502 on the iphone instead of 8ta like on the ipad. Is it possible that this sim card is not allowed to function as a normal sim? and must remain to pure data

CellPhone Q&A

Post by Monty »

Uh. From what I've managed to gleam from what you wrote:
You have a Data only SIM card that you have put in your phone.
You want to complain to 8ta that your data only SIM card is not doing non-data things?
