Re: Windows 8 Release

Post by Ron2K »

I'm in the .NET side of things, but my code functions at the lower levels (think Windows services and direct interaction with the databases). I prefer to keep well away from front-end/web development; although I can do it, I'm far better at writing back-end code.

Shouldn't be too much that affects me there, but I'd like to cover the bases just in case.

Ah, if you do the back-end side you are pretty well off, as long as you avoid VB.Net ( :troll: Tribble)

However as a DBA anything you write, no matter how elegant it seems to you is liable to infuriate me and lead to a ranting tirade about how it could be better accomplished using stored procedures or views :P

Oh, don't worry, I've got the stored procedures and views side covered. While I definitely don't have the skillset that a DBA does, it makes everyone's lives far easier if the developers understand their basic concepts and know where they're coming from.

But enough of that, I'm drifting off-topic here.
I believe that Microsoft has to do something like this in the EU due to their anti-trust legislation.

Anakha, did you actually do the online upgrade? Anyone tried this yet?

Afrihost has found a way to allow us to download it, but when I try it says that my download will be 2GB, which sounds like the 32-bit version of the OS. I want 64-bit.

Or can I just install 32-bit twice?

Edit: Wait, I think I found the answer over at MyBB, which is a forum I generally prefer NOT to consult if I can avoid it.

Consult or insult and then can avoid or can not avoid?

I don't mind insulting it, and I like to avoid it as much as possible.

Whats the max memory that windows 8 can see? Might be worth getting 32gb ram, putting 8gb as system ram and 24gb as a virtual drive for vid capture and encoding. Should be interesting to see what kinda of bandwidth quad channel can push in the right setup.

Still 4 GiB on a 32-bit operating system (due to limitations of the 32-bit architecture); any further information posted assumes that you're running a 64-bit operating system.

While 64-bit operating systems have a theoretical ceiling of 16 EiB addressable memory (16,777,216 TiB), the standard edition of Windows 8 only supports up to 128 GiB, with Windows 8 Pro supporting up to 512 GiB (according to this article anyway). This is up from Windows 7 (8 GiB for Home Starter, 16 GiB for Home Premium, 192 GiB for Professional/Enterprise/Ultimate).

In short, 32 GiB of RAM is supported just fine.

I have one reason and one reason alone why I am ecstatic to have upgraded to the Windows 8 Professional:

Win 7 Pro AFAIK has some limitations with Hyper-V and what you can do. Now I can create my own course machines (as seen above) and study properly :).

You can get it for like $20 if you use their student program.

That being said I guess free does trump $20 if it does the job....

About the Windows 8 online upgrade: does it rely on some sort of live update, or are they considerate enough to provide an .iso file so that one may burn one's own Windows 8 disc?

^^ The installer is considerate enough to let you save/burn an .iso when it's finished downloading all the things.

How do I get windows 8 to download? It complained about my region not being supported.

Then can you also install from a clean boot? Or must you install windows 7 first then use the upgrade?

On the day of release and a couple of days afterwards Afrihost/Axxess clients were getting that error, but it should be sorted now. If you are with Afrihost/Axxess and are still getting that error, contact their support.

Except that Afrihost found a workaround to this problem about a week or so ago, which is why I asked WHEN he last tried the download. From Afrihost's FB page:
Our engineers have managed to implement a solution to enable Windows 8 download. Please let us know if you are still unable to do so.
