ME2 glitch

I'm having a small problem with Mass Effect 2: when I turn the graphics up past a certain point, the orange selection squares refuse to go blue, and I can't interact with people or doors or such. If I turn down the graphics, the problem disappears. It's not just resolution; I've crossed the glitch's threshold with resolution, shadows, and a couple of other effects, all independently. When I recently upgraded my GPU, it seemed to help a bit, but there's still a threshold at significantly below optimum.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Install and run Fraps. Then run the game and report what the frame rate is more or less.
