Many Questions: System Shock 2 Comes To GOG

By Adam Smith on February 13th, 2013 at 11:01 am

Today, Good Old Games announce that they will finally, and exclusively, be selling a digital download version of System Shock 2. It will be available tomorrow. I envy those who can now play for the first time, but there is no longer an excuse not to indulge in yet another playthrough of one of the finest and most frightening games ever made. I spoke to Stephen Kick of Night Dive, who secured the rights and worked on the release, and Guillaume Rambourg at GOG.com. How did all of this come about and what is System Shock 2′s place in gaming, past, present and future?

RPS: The story of the System Shock rights and trademark has frustrated people for years. As I understand it – and I may well be wrong – Looking Glass retained the rights while EA held the trademark. When Looking Glass ceased to be, the rights passed to Meadowbrook Insurance Group and without both, the series cannot be revived. What negotiations, with any parties involved, have taken place in order to secure digital distribution rights?

...
Follow the link for further reading. I am so keen for this being one of those poor souls who never got to play the game :D.

YES!! :D
Kick wrote:Bioshock was definitely more approachable for console gamers, and I think if they had made the game as challenging as System Shock it would have alienated that market. It’s difficult to keep everyone happy these days when the success of a game is determined by units sold or a Metacritic score. Ultimately, I hope that introducing SS2 to new gamers will inspire them to expect more from their gaming experiences.
double this... not going to happen, but we can dream... right?

also..
Kick wrote:SS2 doesn’t rely on cheap scare tactics like creatures jumping from vents or enemies spawning behind you. The fear and atmosphere stems from the cryptic and frightening audio logs you discover that subtly reveal the horrific tragedy that has befallen the Von Braun

my first playthrough has never been matched again.. from the class choices through to the disturbingly creepy atmosphere, the SS games are unique... doom/fear/dead space were entertaining for roughly 5 minutes...

What what? Serious? SS2 getting released on GoG?

Someone just ruined my weekend. I've always wanted to play the game but at the time I was stuck on a 166mmx. I managed to play the demo but that was it. When I got my celeron 466 those days had pass and other games occupied my interest.

waited to verify its mod status before getting it again...

given that it includes all the big mods, (NewDark, etc), grabbed it... easier than managing separate installs... :D

Played the game but keep back tracking. I don't think the game aged too well.

Very good deal. I would recommend Witcher:EE, Deponia, Puddle, King's Bounty: Crossworlds and Alan Wake.

The downside is I have 4 of those games and puddle is $10 making it $8 cheaper than all I just mentioned.

It seems GoG is going through some tough times and is asking for your input on the matter. If you bought games from GoG in the past take a bit of time to go fill out the survey and maybe even share your thoughts on DLC and future games on GoG.

http://www.gog.com/news/new_gaming_opti ... r_from_you

I am happy with Steam but truth be told if I can play any or all my games without needing to connect to a steam server that would be my prime pick.

i have no issue with DLC as long as its reasonable and actually adds something to the game... when it comprises content that was removed from the game and buried behind a paywall.....

frankly, if GoG can provide me the DRM-free version at a similar or slightly higher price, i'd grab it.

My number 1 requirement was that games stayed DRM-free which also meant a CD-key for multiplayer was fine but as soon as an account is required it is some form of access control that goes beyond your own.

Some interesting views from the GoG community though. Many see dlc as cut content sold back and once released it should be part of the game package to provide a complete game. I try to see dlc as an expansion however the stuff that most dlc represent is nothing more than mods.

Someone used the argument that one of the games on steam is on special for $13 and the dlc makes up $100 of the game.

GoG's interplay special weekend:
http://www.gog.com/promo/interplay_weekend_promo_120413

50% off on titles like MDK, Decent and others like Evolva, Sacrifice, Giants.

I'm finding myself in wondering if I should get those old games that I missed or ignore them for being too far gone.

MDK and Sacrifice were revolutionary. the comedy in MDK is still great but it plays best with a joystick/controller in some of the twitchier levels...

Giants is fun, if a little strange and very mixed difficulty-wise... also some superb humour in the SP campaign...

Evolva was novel but not very rewarding or entertaining...

everyone has to play Earthworm Jim at least once and you can't argue with Freespace or Fallout... dated, but still entertaining...

avoid Messiah... terrible Win7 support...

the rest? meh...
