Windows only: Portable application Toucan backs up and syncs your data between two locations (like your hard drive and your USB drive). Weighing in at just over 4.10MB installed, Toucan offers several advanced backup and syncing settings, like incremental backup with compression (supporting 7-Zip format), portable drive variables, scripts and advanced rulesets. Similar to SyncBackSE but smaller and portable, Toucan is a nice option for making sure you've got everything on your thumb drive. Toucan is a free download for Windows only.

Yes, a handy tool.

I also remember another handy tool on the forums who installed this app on his Win2K3 server and crashed it...

I wont mention names

Just downloaded this freeware application suite. It really is awesome. It has it's own type of explorer where everything you do is saved and kept on your flash drive. It's really like a portable office.

Installed applications with a 46MB download:

# Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition (web browser)
# Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition (email)
# Mozilla Sunbird, Portable Edition (calendar/tasks)
# ClamWin Portable (antivirus)
# Pidgin Portable (instant messaging)
# Sumatra PDF Portable (PDF reader
# KeePass Password Safe Portable (password manager)
# Sudoku Portable (game)
# Mines-Perfect Portable (game)
# CoolPlayer+ Portable (audio player)
# OpenOffice.org Portable* (office suite)

EVEN more applications supported that you can download and add on yourself.

The list is too long so check it here: http://portableapps.com/apps

Hey guys. I have to share this. An awesome website I came across with pretty much just freeware MUST-HAVE apps for any techie. From security to performance to fun. Really LOTS of apps. just browse through the pages. I'm surprised myself by how many I've never heard of that I could've used in hundreds of situations. So enjoy.

I was reading some posts yesterday where a guy said he has a program on his pc he uses that disconnects all programs running in the background when he is playing games on his pc.
Does anyone know where one can find such a program?

Another great site to get free software - licensed and legal is Giveaway of the day - although you only have 24 hours to download and install the software for it to be licensed for free. One good thing is that a lot of people recommend free alternatives if you missed the deadline for the day.

Although a great place to get some good downloads, the website is somewhat misleading with promises that the software is free if downloaded within a certain time frame. This is not true as the software is not free, they just give you a link to handy SW, but once downloaded one finds that the software is a demo, products have to be registered or bought there after.

Here's a neat freeware app that allows you to password protect a folder on the fly with hot-keys. Perfect for those boss-walking-towards-your-desk moments :D

Not sure how secure it is though...

This isn't a neat application but considering the idea I think it's worth a mention
"Install multiple apps at once without toolbars or clicking Next."
http://ninite.com/

For those familiar with ninite, is there an app out there for slipstreaming my apps? (Not an OS and apps, only the apps for separate installation)

this would be great for a clean install or restore :D , even better if you're doing more than one workstation at a time

Not sure if this is the place to ask this but I'm looking for a new download manager. I've been using orbit for a while now and it does a great job (getting me speeds faster than what my line technically allows) but ever since it included the software updater it has just become annoying. Any good alternatives?

There might be better ones but I personally use GetRight
It is a paid app but you can use it freely with limited functionality. (Not sure about the current version now)

Orbit. Just use 3.0.0.5 (Like I do, I really dislike 4)

The best in my experience is Internet Download Manager (IDM).
Been using it for years, it's awesome!
The fastest in my opinion.
Supports integration in many browsers, can download YouTube videos, has a web site grabber, and more.
Free 30 day trial available.
