PSU need more 8pin ATX connectors

Post by Iceblade »

I have a ANTEC 650w TRUEPOWER TRIO,
It has 1 8pin ATX connectors,
now my problem is that my motherboard needs 2 and my GPU need 1,
so I need another 2.

I have seen people use the 4pin 12v plug in the motherboards with 1 8pin ATX connectors.
But now my motherboard needs 2.

The GPU need 1 and also 1 normal 6pin.

What can be done ?

Had the same issue for my GTX280 way back when. Used a combination of this and this. Not those exactly, but close enough.

Hey Nuke,
yes I have seen similar products,
but most people say that 8pin is heavy power source and 2molex will not cut it,
they are only enough for 6pin.

Aside from my GTX280 I don't have a lot of pc building experience, but lets have a look from the electronic side.

That card can pull 400W peak from what my quick google skills revealed. That mean 33.4A at 12V across all connectors. From what I can gather the molex connector can deliver a max of 11A per pin 12V. So if you combine 3 of them you are curring it close. But in you case you will combine 4 of them for a 6 pin and an 8 pin, giving your peak draw 75% of what you can supply.

then we still need a extra 8pin EPS connector for the motherboard,
I also checked, the 8pin for motherboard and 8pin for GPU is different,
the 8pin my PSU has only fits on the motherboard, now I need another.

Seen some converters that converts the 4pin into a 8pin, but would it give the correct amount of power?

I don't see why they need all the power connectors on the motherboard. Your CPU can pull 84W. That molex can handle 8A per pin it it use 18 AWG wire. So even a 4pin can handle 16A, more than double of what you need. 2x 8 pin can handle 64A or 768W at 12V.

I wouldn't worry about it. Even if you overclock using LN2 you will not reach it. Your PSU will run out of juice long before the connector can't supply it.

@Nuke: what is "18 AWG wire" please?

@everybody:
On PSUs there are ratings for x amperes on a rail. From my limited understanding that is the highest current that the PSU can supply on it's strongest rail, for example, 24A on it's strongest rail, not 24A on all of it's rails.

I also understand that "rail" means "set of cables with at least one plastic connector on it." So:
- the cable that plugs into the motherboard is a rail
- the cable that plugs into the GPU is a rail
- the cable with a SATA power connector is a rail
- the cable with three SATA power connectors is a rail
- the cable with a stiffy disk power connector is a rail

So how would we know which rail is able to supply the the 24A in our example?

Edit:
Please read the article provided by Hman (and the johnny guru post linked to in the article) and not the incorrect information above.

18 AWG refers to the thickness of the copper of the wire. It tells you how much current a wire can carry.

Thank you very much Hman, that filled a knowledge gap. So rails have everything do with over current protection - shutting down the PSU in the event of a short circuit somewhere, and nothing to do with stability.

Thank you.

So, Ice would need to work out if the PSU has separate rails and if it does what wires have connections to which rail. Then just try and balance out the load over the rails.

But according to http://archive.benchmarkreviews.com/ind ... mitstart=1:
"Two PCI-E connectors for PCI-Express video cards on 550W and 650W models"

Are they six pin PCI-E connectors?

Seasonic apparently has a very good reputation for high quality PSUs.

IANAL but you should be covered by the Consumer Act. You purchased the item outside of a physical shop (I imagine) so you have seven days protection to return it under Buyer's Remorse.
