Asus HD 3870

Post by BeagsX2 »

Hi Guys and as this is my 1st post please be gentle...

I used to be into pc gaming and decided to blow the dust off the aging system i built a few years back

Motherboard: ASUS M387A running AMD quad core quad core 9750 cpu with 4 gb ram and Asus HD 3870 Graphics card.

Would it be worth while installing 8gb of ram and a beefier graphics card so i can enjoy some of these tasty new pc games ??

Any advice greatly appreciated

That is an really old system. It is possible but no idea what results you can get from it.

DDR2 800mhz 4gb will cost you R800 for 2 sticks. Not too bad. Next is your gpu. No idea what your budget is but I think you will max out what your system can do at a radeon 7770.

Maybe post what your budget is and we can either say go for a new system or upgrade what you have.

Like Starbound said, the system is pretty old.

That 3870 was a bit below an 8800 when it came out, so it will pretty pretty slow for some of the new games and will not be able to play games like Crysis 3 at all, since some game have dropped dx9/10 support altogether.

My sister is still running one of those old 1st Gen Phenoms and it looks like she is more limited by her GFX (6670) than the CPU in BF3, which is just about playable at minimum settings.

On the other hand, I used to play BF3 on my 4850 and a Phenom II and it was able to run at fairly high settings, so your CPU might already be a bottleneck.

With that motherboard you should be able to fit a Phenom II chip on it, if you can find one, and that should be sufficient I'd say. In fact, I see it can even support a Phenom II X6, which would be even better.

But let's see what your budget allows.
