What to buy with 5 grand. Please help!

Post by Brad2.0 »

HI Guys

I got R5000 and want to buy mobo, processor and ram. I found the following components on Zaps. Please let me know if i can get anything better on this budget.

MOBO
GIGABYTE X58A-USB3 - Socket LGA1366, 6x DDR3-2000+ Slots, 6x SATA, 12xUSB 2.0, 2xUSB 3.0, 3x PCI Express x16, 3x PCI Express x1, Realtek Gigabit LAN, 7.1 Channel HD Audio, Optical & SPDIF Ports
I know ther is the new chipsets. But his board has xfire and sli, so i wouldnt get bored for a while, cos ther is upgrade options, Also 6 ram slots, so i can upgrade ram in the future.

PROCESSOR
Intel lga1366 i7 930 - Quad core+Hyper-Threading / 8 threads , 2.88ghz box cpu , 4.8GT/s QPi , built-in tripple channel DDR3-1333 memory controler , 45nm - 4x64k L1 + 1mb(4 x 256kb) L2 cache + 8mb L3 cache
For value for money, i read this is a good chip, which can be OC'd to 4ghz. Which I want to do.

RAM
Corsair TR3X6G1600C9 , XMS 3 , with heatsink , 3 x 2Gb/2048mb kit - support Intel XMP ( eXtreme Memory Profiles ) , ddr3-1600 , CL9 , 1.65v - 240pin - lifetime warranty
Basically this is the cheapest 6 gig , I can afford to buy for now. But if it works good enough, I would like to buy a second kit, just because having more is better

I can get all this from Zaps for R5000. I already have
Corsair H50 for cooling
XFX 4890 - which i will use until I can afford a very good card. Have no problems with it so far
Aopen 500w 80 plus rated psu - I know this is gona be my next upgrade. I will need a more better one if im gona OC.

I also have a fan controller, fans and all the other stuff
So please guys let me now what to do.

Ok going through this list do you have windows 7? Because if you want the most out of your system you need a proper multi core OS. XP was all fine and well but at the end of the day 7 handles stuff much better.
Secondly Aopen is a piece of crap. I'm surprised you managed to run that card with that psu. But let's move on. You only want a new mainboard, ram and cpu then you might want to look at the new 1155 boards and cpus.

Reviews and benchmarks say it performs better. The SATA problem has been sorted and new replacement boards are shipping (make sure your get a B3 revision of the board). You will be back at duel channel instead of tripple but it should prove a faster gaming experience. I've still got a P55 board and see no reason to upgrade although I am looking at the new intel chip coming later this year.

It isn't necessarily a bad PSU. I did some research on mine and found that the innards are the same (from the same company) as that found in a few larger brand names, like Corsair, IIRC. That was then though. You'll need to upgrade in any case to a bigger one for the new GPU though.

The 1155 chips are much faster for the same money and are just newer tech in general. There wouldn't be much sense in getting a slower and older system for the same money.

I completely disagree with that, and I know a bunch of other people here will agree.

AOpen PSUs are great. They're a whole lot better than some other big name PSUs, that's for sure.

Ok so the first time today i really looked the 1155 chipset and the sata problem is a concern for me. Especially because we live in Sunny SA. I dnt think we will get tthe replacement boards, in time and since service in this country sucks, to get another board will be a nightmare. I cannot see on any site I visited about replacement boards or that they are selling the revised boards. So i am put off the new technology and think i would prefer to wait when it is sorted properly. I dnt want to spend my money on problems, my finanicial advisor (the wife) is already not to happy im blowing R5000 OR CAN ANONE TELL ME WHERE TO GET THE REVISED BOARDS

So the stuff I am buying is not latest tech but I am sure it will be powerful enough to give me 2 years ,at least, of proper gaming. Especially when I buy new cards later this year to replace my 4890.
For the last 3 years I had a g31 mobo, a dual core chip, which i upgrade to qaud, 4 gig ram, my 9600gt which upgraded toa 4890 and i played all the games above 30fps. Is what i chose that BAD or that old? Thats what i need to know.

You want a P67 B3 board. P67 is the chipset for the socket 1155 and B3 means its been revised and fixed so make sure it says B3 when ordering. After that everything you want is on your own. Checking the board layout, seeing if it is SLI and/or Crossfire compatible and all that jazz. Trust me that the board layout is important if your looking at duel cards and at a 3rd card in any slow like a sound card. I spent a day looking at different boards before I bought mine because of the slot layouts.

So im looking at the 1155 chips Landmark pc has the ffg,

2600k for R2911.56 - im reading that its good,
Asus P8P67 Rev-B3 Intel P67 Chipset ATX mobo - R1727.10 - Has Xfire support and a million other features, god knows whats it for.

What u guys think so far?

Now i have to check if my h50 will fit the new chipset or I have to sell it.
I Like to know. when using a single card the slot is x16, so when using xfire it becomes x8. Is this a bad thing. Its still fast right?. I know there is tons of info on the net, i just like 1st hand experience.

Thanks guys again, for making me spend more than i want too. I still have to buy ram and only will have R400 left for ram and i want 8gig at once. SO i guess im gona overshoot my already overshot budget, lol. O yes one more thing. Should i go 2 x 4gig or 4 x 2gig. I know 2 x 4gig makes more sense for future upgrade possibilities but does it work well, never thought i will ever see 4gig sticks, its insane.

Any budget 1333mhz ram will do the job. Transcend jetram, corsair value ram ect. 4gb will do the job fine but 8gb will give you that extra headroom that you will rarely reach. As for 16x and 8x. On a single card you might loose a few frames but when using crossfire or sli you make up more than enough from having the 2nd card. I see it is a xfire only board so you will only be able to run 2 ATI ..AMD cards if you so wish it. If your not too hot on getting a 2nd card then the board should match all your needs.

Get 4x 2gb sticks. Its the cheapest option.

2600k for R2911.56 - im reading that its good,
Apart from one or two benchmarks, it is faster than the previous generation i7 980X that goes for R10000. That is blistering!

Ram is cheap. If your H50 doesn't fit, you can sell it and go with the stock cooling for now. As long as you don't OC, it will be more than sufficient. You can always get a nice cooler later on when you get some cash again. Nearly any RAM will do. You will not notice a difference in speed between cheap and expensive 1600MHz chips (though the expensive ones might OC better) and nearly all of them come with lifetime warranty's.

Not sure about the 4GB sticks. It will probably be better to get 2x 4GB, if it is more or less the same price, to allow for future upgrades. Not sure why 8GB won't be enough for a long time to come though, unless you are planning on running some professional software with high RAM usage.

So im getting the 2600k processor , the ASUS mobo and 2 x 4gig of ram. Any objections!!!!!!!!!!

Speak now or forever hold ur peace. Cos im going to Cape Town tomorrow on holiday and i will be 20 mins away from LAndmark PC and i will be tempted to buy these items while im there.

It is your decision to make. But i7 2600k + 8gb ram + p67 b3 board for R5k, you wont really find anything to match you at that price. As I said a decent AMD system is cheaper but not on this level.
