I am not. I am too scared of bricking my device. The Xperia Z does come with a whole host of features to prolong battery life and I get about 2 days out of a single charge. I am not starved for charge normally, but this bug brought my battery life down to less than a day!

Having said that, I am not so concerned about my old Arc. The old warhorse needs a good clean, so I might as well root it and slap on a custom ROM. I will then definitely look into greenify and startup manager. Thanks man.

They're (Almost) All Dirty: The State of Cheating in Android Benchmarks
by Anand Lal Shimpi & Brian Klug on October 2, 2013 12:30 PM EST

Thanks to AndreiF7's excellent work on discovering it, we kicked off our investigations into Samsung’s CPU/GPU optimizations around the international Galaxy S 4 in July and came away with a couple of conclusions:
  • 1) On the Exynos 5410, Samsung was detecting the presence of certain benchmarks and raising thermal limits (and thus max GPU frequency) in order to gain an edge on those benchmarks, and

    2) On both Snapdragon 600 and Exynos 5410 SGS4 platforms, Samsung was detecting the presence of certain benchmarks and automatically driving CPU voltage/frequency to their highest state right away. Also on Snapdragon platforms, all cores are plugged in immediately upon benchmark detect.
The first point applied exclusively to the Exynos 5410 equipped version of the Galaxy S 4. We did a lot of digging to confirm that max GPU frequency (450MHz) was never exceeded on the Snapdragon 600 version. The second point however applied to many, many more platforms.

The table below is a subset of devices we've tested, the silicon inside, and whether or not they do a benchmark detect and respond with a max CPU frequency (and all cores plugged in) right away:

...
Follow the link for further reading and the list of devices tested to see which phones do and do not inflate scores. I for one don't give a damn about bench scores because they are useless to me so this is not a big issue for me.

On a side note AndreiF7 makes some of the best kernels for S3 & S4 with support for the Note series as well.

The benchmarks don't matter much at all. The sad, cynical thing is that this is an indication of the type of influence that goes into designing a new phone. Big flashy numbers are prioritized over actual value.

I agree. I have not trusted bench scores since 3D Mark. Still, it I am disappointed that companies would do this. Especially Samsung, since they have such a huge market share.

@GW Sony seems to be off Anandtech's radar. Either A: Anandtech don't like the devices which is odd or B: Sony refuses to send them devices to play with which is more likely. If you root your Sony you could try for us :P.

Actually, Sony has been giving more and more to the developer community. I recall them releasing a patch and making it easy to unlock the Arc, 2 years ago.

Ok.

But first I need to understand something. What is the difference between a ROM and a Kernel?

ROM, the actual software of the phone. The kernel is well the kernel of the OS.

Some roms come packed with their own custom kernels, others don't.

What Hman said :).

Also the fact that Sony has been giving more the developer community is not the same as giving to a reviewer. Maybe Anandtech called them out on something and they have his company black listed for not getting devices? Or a new thought maybe Anandtech has never asked hence the reason for no review unit...

Thanks for clearing that up. that's what I thought, and boy, does it make selecting a good Rooting path difficult.

A couple of weeks back I was re-searching roms for the Arc. 1st stop was cyanogenmod. They have nice packages and clear instructions. Unfortunately they don't have stable release of a Jelly Bean ROM for the Arc. So I did some googling and landed on a couple of results. However while I was reading up on things, I noticed that some developers on XDA recommend this and that Kernel for their ROMS. then my whole world fell apart. All of a sudden I have an infinite number of combinations to chose from. Daunting to say the least.

Anyway I am going with this one. Got good reviews, and he recommends a Kernel.

Currently using Honami Style V2 on my Xperia S with DoomKernel v6.

The rom also has the Z's framework and stuff, but they managed to include it in the standard white or their custom black. I'm using the black version.

The rom and kernel is modified from Sony's newest stock which is still on 4.1.2. But that's fine by me, I had Paranoid Android on a while ago but it wasn't entirely stable and smooth. This rom is smooth as silk.

Kernels are what feels best for you. Some users prefer the first one they try others due to the simplicity in the kernel and in my case the complexity of the kernel. So it all boils down to what suits you the most.

What kernel and ROM are you running Anak? I'm still on Arrow ROM because of its AOSP look, also rock solid and fast and has nice extras. Kernel is Perseus, nice features and no issues.

Sort of, different brand name stuck on it.

THL is apparently big in china.

The nice thing about these phones is they dont have all the crap that gets thrown on with the standard ROM. Oh, and they are dirt cheap

All about Smartphones and Tablets...

Post by Stuart »

iPhone Informer wrote: With some people using Apple’s Maps to drive into no-man’s land and end up in places that could have potentially killed them, the iPhone 5S suffers a similar problem with its motion sensor malfunctioning.

According to CNET and a few other benchmark sites, the iPhone 5S’ motion sensor is prone to being a few degrees off, which means that the GPS is not as accurate as it needs to be.

The issue is currently being dissected by a large number of users who are trying to get to the bottom of the motion sensing malfunction, as some believe that the GPS could lead some users to a very dangerous place if it’s not fixed.

LOL @ Apple. "We got a NEW motion processor that's awesome!" Yeah, pitty about the buggy sensor that feeds it faulty information. :)
