you could try installing linux as a VM(virtual machine) on windows. Look for something called VM Player (its free). You still need a VM image tho...google around for some sites that can create it for you.

Just what I was thinking

At the prompt type:

prompt> sax2

It will open up a dialog when you can choose resolutions and refresh rates, and you can test before applying your changes.

Try deleting and re-creating the dial-up connection. Maybe one of the options was changed and is causing a problem.
