Depends what usage you need out of this, but you could set up a 3G router with a high gain antenna.

Which mine is this, the diamond mine? I did some work their, had decent 3G access using a higher gain antenna.

Then I tried to update from iOS 3.1.2 to iOS 4.1 (I downloaded the IPSW file from an Apple link.) Anyway, it failed midway through ...

If you turn the screen on its side and adjust the colour settings, you could probably get it to look like normal.

That failing, why not just test it in another PC to confirm that it is, indeed, faulty.
