Which modem / network are you using? USB Vodaphone and on Vodacom 3g network Well you USB modem is the obvious culprit. Os, office version? software conflict sounds most likely. Have you tried plugging the modem in once office is running? Tried a different usb port? Wondering if anyone has a fix for this, everytime I plug in my USB 3g modem i cant open up any MSOffice apps, they just hang and as soon as i unplug the modem they go in and work perfectly.

navigate to c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$ directory there should be an exe there
you can run.
This is a longshot though cause your xp is slipstreamed so you might have to get a another xp
