Re: Number of developers for PHP vs Python

We have a So Who is a Programmer On The Forum? thread which shows 0 people here know Python, while Creator, eraser, F-ROD, skunkymunky, Pollynator, PHR33K and myself claim to know PHP Hey, look at that. Completely forgot about that thread. Shot! If that is in any way a reliable canvas of SA program...

Number of developers for PHP vs Python

I'm well aware of the differences, benefits and disadvantages of using PHP vs Python. What I'm interested in finding out is the number of skilled South African developers for each language, and whether there are a significantly higher number of developers skilled in one vs the other language. My hyp...

Re: Streaming to multiple speakers

Well actually, I can use a laptop as the source, and then just stream the music to the two PCs that I want to play the music on. As long as the buffer period is the same on both destination computers, it should be fine. I've never set up a shoutcast or icecast server before, but it's worth a try, th...

Streaming to multiple speakers

I'm trying to play music on my PC and broadcast it to other computers' speakers in the house, keeping the audio in sync. I've tried an application called Airfoil which allows streaming to multiple speakers - it's a fantastic application, but the sound quality is rubbish for music, and introduces cli...

Re: The Equestrian (Horse) Thread!!!

Can anybody recommend an area in/near Durban where I could get a half-lease on a horse? Preferably someplace near a large outdoors area so that I can go riding in the bush or on the beach rather than around a track.

Re: The Official Android Thread, V2.0

I still haven't flashed my phone with a new ROM yet - haven't had the time. However, I keep running into this annoying issue of space constraints. I am able to move some of my apps onto the SD card from the App Settings page, but most seem to reside on the phone itself, or keep their main program on...

Re: The Official Android Thread, V2.0

Ok I am now thoroughly confused. Rooted my phone with unrEVOked, and now I'm presented with a menu when I boot it up? What next? Do I now have to upload a new image? [edit] Ah, nevermind. Another reboot placed me back into friendly territory. Yay, back to homescreen. I guess now I can access the boo...

Re: The Official Android Thread, V2.0

So Albert (Darkranger) got a Desire today, and came over for me to have my way with it :P He seriously had the phone on for about 40 seconds and then gave it to me to root. So the phone's rooted, and running SuperVillain. BTW, this Desire came with 2.2, and it's one of the SLCD versions too. Ett, h...

Re: The Official Android Thread, V2.0

Got myself an HTC Desire today :D Seems like there was only 1 Vodashop in the whole of KZN that had stock of these things, for the first time in 3 months too. Phone comes with Android 2.2. I'll import the Desire HD once it becomes available and give this one to my gf. What a lovely phone... Anyhow, ...

Define "pay well".
Also, are you looking for a holiday, part-time, or fulltime job?

Re: Bulk email: How to?

Sticking all your email addresses only in the BCC field breaks RFC standards, and there are tons of mail servers / relays out there that won't accept mail which only has BCC addresses specified. The best would be to go for a proper bulk mailing solution (Mailman would do the trick) or pay for a chea...

Looking for an Asus EeePC Charger

My Asus EeePC charger gave in last week, and I need to try and source a new one from somewhere. Any suggestions for who might sell these? (either suppliers or retailers are fine). My location is Durban, but I suppose I can have it posted/couriered from anywhere really. The charger I need is the same...

Re: mySQL and Active Directory 2003

Active Directory is fully LDAP3 compliant, and as such the best and most correct way of interfacing with AD is through LDAP. Most languages will support LDAP natively or at the very least through an additional library, which makes it as simple as constructing a correct LDAP query to authenticate aga...

Re: Abscess on root of tooth

Hey Tribs :) An abscess on the root of your tooth is quite serious and you should get it checked out asap. Usually the abscess will be drained and an antibiotic applied directly to the tooth with a pad that must remain attached to the tooth for a day. Cataflam-D is used for inflammatory pain, so tak...

The latency when using the compression engine to speed up websites is totally unacceptable when you're on any connection faster than 56k. Otherwise, it's a fantastic update from Opera.

If it's for a single PC running Windows, RouteSentry is your best option.
Otherwise, have a look at this thread on MyBroadband. It's been discussed there many times before.

Re: Buying from Amazon

Right, well I managed to get some info. It would seem that all items that are marked under $120 are customs free. Everything marked over that amount may or may not be charged, depending on how much the official had to drink the previous night :P So my best best is buying from E-Bay and getting the p...

It's an Asus EEE-PC 1000HE. Rated the top netbook available at the moment, at least on a bang-for-buck ratio. Nobody imports them in SA. I've tried all the major suppliers.

Re: Buying from Amazon

You need to pay vat on all imports R3050 + 14% Vat + 6% Import duties and you end up paying R3660 Add shipping and penalties for importing something that is already available and you might just end up paying R5050 for it. This is the problem; there so many conflicting views. I definitely know of pe...

Well I've just phoned FedEx and they're not very clued up. All they can tell me is that there may be VAT payable as well as customs for any item over R500. How on earth do I find out exactly whether or not VAT and customs is payable?

Re: Buying from Amazon

Yeah Ett, I got it, thanks :) R5050 from Have2Have, compared to R3050 from Amazon. That's quite a difference. With 15.4% import duties this comes to R3520 Add courier fees of around R500 and I'm sitting on R4020. If there isn't an additional amount to pay for VAT, then I'm saving just over R1000. Qu...

Re: Buying from Amazon

Thanks for your helpful answer :) Thing is, I'm trying to work out whether it'll be cheaper importing it directly, or getting it through an import company like Have2Have. If I have to pay 15% customs, and 14% VAT, and another R500 for courier fees, it'll be cheaper just getting it through Have2Have....

Buying from Amazon

I've posted this question on MyBroadband, but I'll post it here too because I'd like some additional feedback. Amazon are really cheap when it comes to netbooks. Is it safe importing directly from Amazon? I've never done anything like this before. I'd be making use of a courier service like DHL. Now...
