Frustrating issue - Weird IP address

I have this weird issue that is causing alot of stress in my life. We are a small company that have 9 PC's connected on a LAN. All the PC's connect to a central 48-port switch (unmanaged Cisco or something, but a good quality switch). I use the 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254 IP addresses. My PC is 192....

OK Restarted PC a few times already, so covered points 1 - 4 already. now 1: Installed Win 7, AVG, Adobe reader and printer driver. Tested. Printer worked. Installed the HP 3600. Tested. It worked. Signed of to wife, project successful. Got told last week HP3600 does not print. Moved USB cable to HP...

Printer driver acting up

Printer not working. When I try to print nothing happens. When I go to Printer Properties, Print Test Page it immediately tells me: "Test page failed to print. Would you like to ... blah blah troubleshooter ... blah blah" Troubleshooter fails ti ID the problem. Worth nothing. The printer (...

Re: Scam: SARS payment

I get that email often. Know it is a scam. Every once a while I would click on it. One takes you to an official sars efaile looking page where you can click on your corresponding bank. Top address is not https or even the correct address. Likely temporary. I would put in a fake no. Password f@(#you ...

Selecting OS for File Server

Hi, I am building a second file server mainly as a server that can host large files (100 MB to 2 GB each) that is infrequently accesses, such as topographical maps, as well as a backup for the main file server hosting the documents we use daily. After spending a few hours (more likely a day) I am st...

Running PC's in parallel

Hi, We use one file server at our office to store our work documents as well as topographic images. It contains 4x 2 TB HDDs running in RAID 10 (Adaptec card), and I have found the server to be fine most of the times. However, we recently appointed 2 more people, and it appears if more than one pers...

Darn *$&# PC artifacts and Crashes when Alt-Tab

My PC has been giving artifacts all over the screens when I Alt-tab between programmes. It may work great for a few hours, then give trouble, or it may give trouble directly after a restart (after a crash). It always happens after I Alt-tabbed between programmes. I normally have between 5 and 20 pro...

Wanted: Laptop with 17" or larger screen, sub 2 kg preferred

Hi, I urgently need a new laptop, mine is old and needs a reformat. Anyone know of a place having a great deal. I need to have the laptop in my hands by Wednesday at the latest. Looking for a great deal up to about R10,000. It must have a 17" or larger screen, and preferably weigh less than 2 k...

Re: 24" PC Screen

Sorry, I meant LCD. The last CRT I bought was 7 years ago. I have three screens on my PC, a T240 (4:3 aspects ratio) and 2x SA350 (14:9 aspect or wide). The "normal 24" is just better in business applications, as it shows more of a spreadsheet, in CAD work, etc. So I would prefer to get 2x...

24" PC Screen

I am looking for a 24" PC screen, but not the wide crap. I would prefer a 24" and not larger, as I have found that the 27" screens are just too big and actually cumbersome at the distance I sit from the PC. Also, with 3 of those screens on a table there is little space left for anythi...

Re: Point of View Graphics cards

lol. Ram is cheap, I have 2x 24" monitors but I mainly play Warcraft III (Dota), perhaps 5 hours a week. I actually use my PC for work and I frequently have a number of powerhog programmes open, sometimes photoshop with a 1 or 2 GB image or 10, GoogleEarth Pro, a few excell spreadsheets, one or...

Point of View Graphics cards

Hi, I am in the process of finalising my annual PC upgrade. I have selected the i5-2500 as the best bang for buck, I normally stick to the Intel boards and will drop in 16 GB of ram. I received a relative good cost for the Point of View GTX560TI 2048MB card, but since I am not familiar with the bran...

Tower case that can be used as file server

Hi, After an initial scare this morning (2 drives failed in our RAID10 system), I have decided to replace the Gigabyte case I have been using for the past few years. There are currently 6 HDD's in the system, with two in the 5.25" bays. I have search the net on suitable cases that I can use, an...

Re: Second hand value - PC

What makes this a serious consideration is the P180 case, which is a brilliant case. But I will also price the new components. Other option would be to upgrade the ram in the laptop to 4 GB and try Windows 7 on that. Any recommendations on who I can approach in Pta to get a price ?It is an Acer Trav...

Second hand value - PC

Hi, Considering to buy a PC, however do not have an idea of the real value. I intent on running Windows 7 64 on it, and use it for acoustic related work. Perhaps a game or two every now and then, but it will mainly be used for work purposes. The asking price for the components together are R4,050. C...

Re: Worst pc's ever

The reason people dislike Sahara and Mecer and the other "cheap" brand PCs are the cases. More specifically the PSUs that come with the cases. The components inside is generally good, and I know that Sahara used to build ASUS MB's and geenral good stuff inside the cases. But then the PSU (...

Donno whether I should start a new thread or just use this one. Scanned through this one, but do not really see what I need. I am in the market for a Tablet PC. I have a sh!%-load of reading to do (for work), and most of the stuff I read is in PDF format. So I am in the market for a tablet PC, and o...

Re: New PC: Build recommendations

Since I have a LGA775 motherboard, I see I also have the option of taking a LGA775 CPU, such as the E8600 Core 2 Duo 3.33GHz (R2350), the Q9550 2.83GHz (R2400), or should I get new motherboard with the i7 950 3.06 GHz (R2560). Re: New PC: Build recommendations

I rather stick with Intel. Normally I buy a PC, build it and leave it alone for a long time. I do not replace heatsinks, overclock and play around with the PC. In addition, experience have shown me that Intel just is slightly faster with calculations. Our server runs on RAID 10, and if I go for a RA...

OK, sorry. One major mistake. The images are approximately 10 - 200 MB, not GB  We do noise modelling (sound propagation), and use photo editing software and GIS for mapping purposes. I am not a photo or GIS expert, use it minimum to do reports. Problem is the massive tiff images that we use (...

OK. Another PC build thread. While I have read the other threads, I do not overclock, and my use is far different from the normal gamer. I recently upgraded my graphics card to the Gigabyte HD5850 card, but suddenly my PC overheated. I had the same problem with my previous 9600GT card (the reason fo...

Re: x58 wars!!!

OK. Thinking of going the Windows 7 route (still using XP). But putting my stuff in a new case such as the 932 is a waste, so I am considering upgrading everything. We fortunately need another PC in the office, so I will give my PC to the guy needing one. We do alot of modelling and GIS work, so mot...
