Great, thanks D3PARTED,
Off to get the Corsair 1050 then. Going to bust the bank a little but at least I know that the PSU will not be a weak link in my system come future upgrade time!

Re: PSU buying advice
I was using a 800W PSU. I am not running SLI at the moment but I do have a GTX680, 3 hard disks (1 is a SSD) and an overclocked Core I7 4770K. Also a Corsair Hydro H100i closed water cooling system/pump. Lots of USB connections too. I know I could probably get away with 750W easily at the moment but...

PSU buying advice
I am needing to purchase a new PSU for my current system (see signature). I know it is overkill but I am looking to get the Corsair HX1050 (1050W). It is pricy but that aside, is it ok to have a fair bit more power in reserve, or will I be creating problems for myself by installing a PSU that will n...

Intel Speed Step - on or off for over-clocking?
Hi guys, is it safe to turn off Intel Speed Step in the BIOS? What do most over clockers do with this setting? Asus has an extensive overclocking guide for this BIOS on their website but they do not mention this setting at all. If I leave it on, my brand new Asus Maximus Hero VI motherboard and Inte...

Re: SSD Questions
Thanks for all the info - really helping me! Perhaps I should have researched the AHCI thing a little more... Anyway, don't want to start all over again :? - at least not right now, perhaps with the next format I will experiment with AHCI. Hopefully that won't be too soon :-) . Another Q - if one do...

Yes - in IDE mode. Plugged into SATA 1 on the mobo. Perhaps I am being too conservative - I would also say that by the time the logo comes together, no more than a half second or so and the desktop is on the screen. But then, I counted another couple seconds until there was absolutely no disk activi...

Re: SSD Questions
I tried to time just the OS part but it is hard to know exactly where the BIOS stops and the OS starts. Within about 1 -1.5 seconds accuracy I rate it at 14 seconds - and thats to the Win 7 desktop - and the OS is finished loading stuff in the background - disK light is off and waiting for me. My pr...

Re: SSD Questions
Thanks - installed it last night. All went well. Raised my WEI score to an overall 7.4 from 5.9 (in both cases, limited by the hard disk) rest of the scores are 7.9 except CPU at 7.6. Amazing boot up time - less than 30 seconds to Windows desktop from cold boot up. Shut down almost instantaneous. Se...

Re: SSD Questions
Thanks - I beleive it does have "trim" although I am not sure how this works (I know what it does - keeps the drive clean). Apparently it comes supplied with a bracket to fit a standard drive bay. One thing that has got me slightly concerned. This drive is reported to be one of the first t...

Hey all, Placed an order today for a new 256GB SSD - Crucial "C300CTFDDAC256MAG-1G1 C300 2.5" 256Gb SATA6G MLC SSD". I have read rave reviews on this SSD, including the current edition of PC Format Mag (Decemner 2010). As soon as it arrives, I plan to use this as my OS boot drive and ...

GTX295 overheating
I have a GTX295 that as we all know runs hot at the best of times. Now that summer is here, I am occassionally getting a situation where during a game, the pc suddenly shuts down and restarts. No BSOD. It is as if the power has been cut. The PC the restarts. I am attributing this to the Graphics car...

CPU Temperature monitoring software
I have finally received my new CPU cooler today - a Thermaltake Ultra 120 eXtreme 1366 air cooler for the i7. It installed easily enough (if taking the entire mobo out is considered easy :? ) and now I want to load software that will give a reliable report in Windows on the CPU core temps. I current...

Re: Core i7 aftermarket cooler
Thanks Adv4nced,
I see you do have one of these also from your signature. Don't suppose anyone knows where I could pick one of these up without going the online shop route (in and around JNB). Impatient and don't want to wait a week for delivery if I can help it

Core i7 aftermarket cooler
Hi all, I have a LGA1366 Core i7 920 CPU 2.66GHz currently running at 2.9GHz on the stock Intel CPU cooler. Running with this and the Intel Turbo function (which may be adding to the o/clock but I'm not sure) I am getting temps close to the 70 degree mark when running MS Flight Sim X for several hou...

Overclocking question
I have recently put a new PC together (specs in signature). I was not planning to o/clock this just yet but the ASUS M/B came supplied with something called EPU-6 (Windows based o/clock software) so I started playing with it. Without any o/clock I get a 3D mark score of around 18200. With a 10% o/cl...

Re: Can Anyone say Lousy Audi.....
Not what you expect from Audi. I am on my third Audi and have had only compliments but a single incident like this can destroy ones faith in a brand. Perhaps you should have gone to the police and laid a charge of theft against the dealer principle of the dealership that collected the car. That woul...
